After a VERY windy start I arrived at the Oxo Tower at South Bank for the Charlie May show. Once seated, I read about the inspiration behind the collection - the rugged, windswept landscapes of Devon - and felt like my weatherbeaten hair fit in quite well... Along with a brief description about the work, guests were given a free 'crodough' from Rinkoff Bakeries. That's a mix between a croissant and donut - very tasty!
The collection itself was minimalist with clean lines and monochromatic colour scheme mixed with navy. I loved the exaggerated, long ribbed sleeves on the knitwear and oversized roll necks. It created a very interesting silhouette.
May used Mongolian fur and pony skin to mimic the textures seen in the natural landscapes of Devon and this made for some beautiful outerwear pieces and sheen on dresses and skirts.
There was a lot of attention to detail in the construction of the garments from panelled pieces to small tucks at the neck on tops and dresses. One of my favourite details was a pair of trousers with slits across the knees.
To accessorise, May collaborated with New York milliner, Gigi Burris to create school boy felt hats which, along with the tailoring, gave the collection an androgynous feel. To finish off, outfits were completed with tread sole, chunky trainers in crisp white.
